Wash your hands and the affected finger with soap and water
Sterilize a pair of tweezers and a needle with rubbing alcohol
Use a magnifying glass and good lighting if needed
If the splinter tip is visible, grasp it with the tweezers and pull it out in the same direction it entered
If the splinter is under the skin, gently lift the skin surface with the sterilized needle until the tip is exposed
Remove the splinter with the tweezers once the tip is accessible
Wash the area again with soap and water
Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment
Cover the area with a clean bandage
Change the bandage daily and keep the area clean
Seek medical help if the splinter is deeply embedded, near the nail, very painful, or cannot be removed
Seek medical help if there is redness, swelling, pus, or fever
