Apply a cold compress for 10–20 minutes at a time during the first 24–48 hours
Rest and elevate the bruised area when possible
Use a compression bandage if swelling is present and it is comfortable
After 48 hours, apply a warm compress for 10–20 minutes at a time
Take acetaminophen for pain if needed
Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen in the first 24 hours if possible
Protect the bruise from further injury
Eat foods rich in vitamin C and vitamin K
Stay hydrated
Seek medical care if the bruise is large, very painful, keeps getting bigger, happens often, or appears without injury
