Do not twist, crush, or jerk the tick
Do not use heat, petroleum jelly, alcohol, or nail polish
Clean the bite area with soap and water
Clean the tweezers with alcohol or soap and water
Save the tick in a sealed bag or container if possible
Wash hands thoroughly
Monitor the bite site for rash, fever, or illness
Seek medical care if the tick cannot be removed completely or if symptoms develop
