How to Do MLA Citations?

Put the author’s last name and page number in parentheses after the quoted or paraphrased material

Example: (Smith 23)

If there is no author, use a shortened version of the title in quotation marks

Example: (“Climate Change” 45)

If there is no page number, include only the author’s last name

Example: (Smith)

For a work with two authors, include both last names

Example: (Smith and Jones 18)

For three or more authors, use the first author’s last name followed by et al.

Example: (Smith et al. 12)

Place the parenthetical citation before the period

Works Cited entries should be alphabetized by the first word of each entry

Start each Works Cited entry with the author’s last name, then first name

Put the title of a book, website, or other standalone work in italics

Put the title of an article, essay, or page in quotation marks

Include publication information such as publisher, date, and source

Use a hanging indent for each Works Cited entry

Double-space the entire Works Cited page

Match every in-text citation to a full entry in Works Cited

Match every Works Cited entry to an in-text citation in the paper
