How to In-Text MLA Cite a Website?

Use the author’s last name in parentheses: (Smith)

If there is no author, use the website title in quotation marks: (“Article Title”)

If the website title is long, shorten it to the first word or two: (“Article”)

If there is no page number, omit it

If the source has paragraph numbers, use them instead: (Smith, par. 4)

If the source has section headings, use them if helpful: (Smith, sec. 2)

If the author’s name is mentioned in the sentence, put only the page or paragraph reference in parentheses

If multiple authors are listed, use the first author’s last name followed by et al.: (Jones et al.)

If the website is an organization with no individual author, use the organization name: (World Health Organization)
