Do not try to drain an abscess at home
Do not squeeze, puncture, cut, or lance it
Keep the area clean and dry
Apply a warm, moist compress for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, several times a day
Cover it with a clean, dry bandage if it is draining on its own
Wash your hands before and after touching the area
Do not share towels, razors, or clothing
Seek urgent medical care if it is large, very painful, on the face, spine, groin, or near the anus
Seek urgent medical care if you have fever, chills, spreading redness, worsening swelling, or red streaks
Seek urgent medical care if you have diabetes, a weakened immune system, or recurrent abscesses
Seek medical care if it is not improving within 24 to 48 hours
Call emergency services if you have trouble breathing or feel faint
