Check that the mussels are cooked and that any shells that did not open are discarded
Hold one shell half in your hand and use it like tongs to pick the meat from the other shell
Remove the mussel meat from the shell with your fingers or a small fork
Pull off and discard the beard if it is still attached
Dip the mussel meat in sauce if desired
Eat the mussel meat in one bite or in small bites
Set empty shells aside on a separate plate or bowl
Use bread, fries, or a spoon to enjoy any remaining sauce
