List the data values or categories
Count how many times each value or category appears
Record the count for each value or category as its frequency
Use a tally chart if needed to keep track of counts
For grouped data, place values into class intervals first
Count the number of observations in each class interval
Check that the total of all frequencies equals the total number of data points
Use relative frequency if you need the proportion or percentage of each value
Use cumulative frequency if you need running totals across ordered data
