Turn off the garbage disposal switch
Unplug the disposal or turn off the circuit breaker
Check for a tripped reset button on the bottom of the unit
Press the reset button if it has tripped
Use a flashlight to inspect the disposal opening
Remove any visible foreign objects with tongs or pliers
Never put your hand inside the disposal
Insert a hex key into the bottom hex socket if the unit is jammed
Turn the hex key back and forth to free the impeller
Turn the power back on and test the disposal
Run cold water and try the disposal again
Check the sink drain and P-trap for clogs if water still backs up
Tighten any loose mounting or drain connections
Replace a worn or damaged splash guard
Replace the disposal if it leaks from the body
Replace the disposal if it hums but will not run after resetting and unjamming
Call a licensed plumber or electrician if the problem continues
