Swallow, yawn, or chew gum
Try the Valsalva maneuver gently
Use the Toynbee maneuver
Apply a warm compress to the ear
Use saline nasal spray if congestion is present
Stay hydrated
Try steam inhalation
Use over-the-counter decongestants only if appropriate
Use over-the-counter antihistamines if allergies are causing congestion
Use ear drops only if recommended for earwax
Remove visible earwax gently with a damp cloth
Do not insert cotton swabs or objects into the ear
Avoid forceful blowing of the nose
Keep water out of the ear if swimmer’s ear is suspected
See a doctor if pain, fever, drainage, hearing loss, or dizziness occurs
Seek medical care if the clogging lasts more than a few days
