Park on a flat, safe surface and set the parking brake
Do not drive on a visibly flat tire
Inspect the tire to confirm the nail is in the tread, not the sidewall or shoulder
If the puncture is in the sidewall or shoulder, replace the tire
If the tire is losing air quickly, install the spare tire or call roadside assistance
Remove the wheel if needed for easier repair
Mark the nail location
Remove the nail with pliers
Check the hole size and condition
Use a tire plug kit only for a tread puncture as a temporary repair
Ream the puncture hole with the kit tool
Insert the plug into the puncture
Trim excess plug material flush with the tread
Reinflate the tire to the recommended pressure
Spray soapy water on the repair area to check for leaks
If bubbles appear, redo the repair or replace the tire
Reinstall the wheel if removed
Tighten lug nuts in the correct pattern and torque
Drive a short distance and recheck tire pressure
Have the tire professionally inspected and repaired with an internal patch-plug if possible
Replace the tire if the puncture is too large or the damage is severe
