Make sure your home allows fostering
Prepare a separate safe space for the dog
Remove hazards and secure food, trash, and valuables
Gather supplies: crate, bed, leash, collar, bowls, food, toys, cleaning supplies
Ask the rescue or shelter for the dog’s medical, behavioral, and feeding history
Follow the rescue’s instructions for feeding, medication, and routines
Introduce the dog slowly to your home and other pets
Keep the dog on a consistent schedule
Use a leash and secure fencing for outdoor time
Monitor behavior, appetite, bathroom habits, and energy level
Provide exercise, enrichment, and affection as appropriate
Socialize the dog gradually and safely
Communicate regularly with the rescue or shelter
Attend vet appointments if required
Keep records of the dog’s health, behavior, and progress
Help with adoption photos, bios, and meet-and-greets if asked
Return the dog to the rescue when the foster period ends or the dog is adopted
