Wash towels in hot water with 1 cup white vinegar, no detergent
Rewash towels in hot water with regular detergent and 1/2 cup baking soda
Use the hottest water safe for the towel fabric
Avoid overloading the washer so towels can agitate properly
Add an extra rinse cycle to remove residue
Dry towels completely right after washing
Use high heat in the dryer if the fabric allows
Hang towels fully spread out between uses
Wash damp towels promptly instead of leaving them in a pile
Clean the washing machine drum, gasket, and detergent drawer
Leave the washer door open after use to let it dry
Avoid using too much detergent or fabric softener
Repeat the treatment if the smell remains
Replace towels that still smell after repeated washing
