Apply a cold compress or wrapped ice pack for 10 to 20 minutes at a time during the first 24 to 48 hours
Repeat cold compresses every 1 to 2 hours while awake
Keep your head elevated, especially when resting or sleeping
Avoid rubbing, pressing, or massaging the area
Use acetaminophen for pain if needed
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen during the first 24 hours unless a doctor says otherwise
Switch to warm compresses after 48 hours to help circulation
Protect the eye from further injury
Rest and avoid strenuous activity
Use makeup or concealer only if the skin is not broken
Seek medical care if you have vision changes, severe pain, blood in the eye, vomiting, dizziness, or the injury was caused by a strong blow
