Swallow, yawn, or chew gum
Try the Valsalva maneuver gently: pinch your nose, close your mouth, and blow softly
Use steam or inhale warm shower air
Apply a warm compress to the affected ear
Use over-the-counter saline nasal spray if congestion is present
Take an over-the-counter decongestant if appropriate for you
Sleep with your head elevated
Avoid inserting cotton swabs or other objects into the ear
Keep the ear dry if water is trapped inside
Use a few drops of mineral oil or olive oil only if you suspect earwax and have no ear pain, drainage, or eardrum issues
See a doctor if it lasts more than a few days, is painful, or you have hearing loss, dizziness, fever, or drainage
