Use a warm compress on the affected ear for 10–15 minutes at a time
Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label
Keep the ear dry
Avoid putting cotton swabs, fingers, or other objects into the ear
Sleep with the affected ear slightly elevated
Use over-the-counter ear drops only if a pharmacist or doctor says they are safe for your type of ear problem
Drink plenty of fluids and rest
Use a humidifier if congestion is present
Try saline nasal spray if the infection is related to a cold or sinus congestion
Seek medical care if symptoms are severe, last more than 2–3 days, or include fever, drainage, hearing loss, dizziness, or swelling around the ear
