Use a warm compress on the affected ear
Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label
Rest and keep your head elevated
Stay hydrated
Avoid putting anything into the ear
Avoid getting water into the ear
Use over-the-counter ear drops only if they are labeled safe for ear pain and you have no ear drainage or eardrum injury
Chew gum or yawn if the pain is from pressure changes
Treat allergies or nasal congestion if present
See a doctor if the pain is severe, lasts more than 1 to 2 days, or comes with fever, drainage, hearing loss, or dizziness
