Stop shaving and try trimming instead until the bumps clear
Use a gentle exfoliant 2–3 times per week (e.g., lactic acid or salicylic acid)
Wash the area with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water
Apply a warm compress for 5–10 minutes, 1–2 times daily for inflamed bumps
Avoid tight clothing and friction; wear breathable fabrics
Keep the area dry; change out of sweaty clothes quickly
Don’t pick, squeeze, or scratch the bumps
Switch to a fresh, sharp razor and shave with the grain
Use shaving gel/cream and a light hand; avoid multiple passes
Consider an electric trimmer instead of a razor
Use a non-comedogenic moisturizer after washing
If folliculitis is suspected, use an OTC benzoyl peroxide wash (use as directed)
If bumps are itchy or irritated, consider an OTC hydrocortisone 1% cream for up to 3–7 days (avoid on broken skin)
If bumps are persistent or recurrent, consider seeing a dermatologist for prescription options (topical antibiotics, retinoids, or other treatments)
Seek medical care if there is spreading redness, severe pain, pus, fever, or no improvement after 2–4 weeks
