Use a gentle, fragrance-free shampoo
Wash regularly with lukewarm (not hot) water
Limit shampooing with harsh or clarifying products
Consider an anti-dandruff shampoo (choose one and use as directed):
Ketoconazole
Selenium sulfide
Zinc pyrithione
Salicylic acid
Coal tar
Leave medicated shampoo on the scalp for 5–10 minutes before rinsing
Use the medicated shampoo 2–3 times per week, then reduce to maintenance as symptoms improve
Stop using heavy oils or greasy conditioners on the scalp
Condition only the hair lengths, not the scalp
Avoid scratching the scalp and minimize friction (towels, tight hats)
Reduce heat styling and hot blow-drying
Avoid frequent hair dye/bleach and strong chemical treatments
Use a humidifier if indoor air is very dry
Check for product buildup; clarify occasionally with a gentle clarifying shampoo if needed
If you use hair products, switch to alcohol-free and fragrance-free options
If symptoms persist or worsen, see a dermatologist to rule out eczema, psoriasis, fungal infection, or contact dermatitis
Seek care urgently if there is severe redness, pain, oozing, thick scales, hair loss, or widespread rash
