Wash your face gently twice daily with a mild cleanser
Use a non-comedogenic moisturizer daily
Apply over-the-counter salicylic acid (0.5%–2%) to whitehead-prone areas once daily, then increase if tolerated
Use benzoyl peroxide (2.5%–5%) only if whiteheads also include inflamed pimples
Try adapalene 0.1% gel at night (pea-sized amount for the whole affected area), 2–3 nights per week at first, then increase as tolerated
Keep hair products, sunscreen, and makeup non-comedogenic and oil-free
Avoid heavy, greasy skincare and hair/face oils that can clog pores
Don’t pick, squeeze, or scrub whiteheads
Use sunscreen daily (non-comedogenic) to reduce irritation and dark marks
Replace or clean items that touch your face regularly (pillowcases, phone screen, makeup brushes, masks)
Cleanse after sweating and remove makeup promptly
Consider using an acne-safe cleanser with zinc or sulfur if you’re sensitive to stronger actives
If no improvement in 8–12 weeks, see a dermatologist for prescription options (topical retinoids, antibiotics, or procedures)
Seek urgent care if you develop painful, rapidly worsening acne, spreading redness, or scarring
