Keep toenails clean and dry
Trim nails straight across and keep them short
Wear breathable shoes and moisture-wicking socks
Change socks daily, or more often if sweaty
Use antifungal treatment if a fungus is the cause
Apply over-the-counter antifungal cream or nail solution as directed
See a doctor for prescription antifungal medication if needed
Avoid nail polish and artificial nails until the nails improve
Disinfect nail tools after each use
Do not share nail clippers, files, or shoes
Treat athlete’s foot if present
Stop smoking if discoloration is related to smoking
Seek medical care if the yellowing is painful, thick, spreading, or not improving
