Wash your hands
Do not rub the eye
Blink several times
Rinse the eye with clean water or saline
Pull the upper eyelid over the lower eyelid and blink
Look in a mirror to see if the object is visible
Use a clean, damp cotton swab only if the object is on the white part of the eye or eyelid
Remove contact lenses if you wear them
Flush the eye again after removing contacts
Seek medical help if the object is stuck, sharp, or not coming out
Seek urgent care if there is pain, vision changes, bleeding, or chemical exposure
