Swallow, yawn, or chew gum
Try the Valsalva maneuver gently
Use the Toynbee maneuver by pinching your nose and swallowing
Apply a warm compress to the outside of the ear
Use over-the-counter ear drops if earwax is the cause
Use a few drops of mineral oil or baby oil to soften earwax
Let warm shower steam loosen congestion
Stay hydrated
Avoid inserting cotton swabs or other objects into the ear
Use a saline nasal spray if the clog is from congestion
Take a decongestant if appropriate and safe for you
See a doctor if pain, drainage, fever, dizziness, or hearing loss occurs
Get medical help if the ear remains clogged for more than a few days
