Choose a ripe avocado
Remove the pit carefully
Wash the pit clean
Insert three to four toothpicks into the pit
Suspend the pit over a glass of water with the broad end facing down
Keep the bottom of the pit submerged in water
Place the glass in a warm spot with indirect sunlight
Change the water every few days
Wait for roots and a stem to grow
Plant the pit in a pot with well-draining soil when roots are several inches long
Leave the top half of the pit above the soil
Water the soil regularly to keep it lightly moist
Place the pot in bright indirect light
Move the plant to a larger pot as it grows
Pinch back the stem to encourage bushier growth
Protect the plant from cold temperatures
Fertilize lightly during the growing season
Watch for pests and treat them promptly
