How To Grow Shallots?

Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil

Prepare soil by loosening it and mixing in compost

Plant shallot sets or bulbs in early spring or fall

Separate bulbs into individual cloves before planting

Place cloves pointy end up

Space cloves 4 to 6 inches apart

Plant cloves 1 to 2 inches deep

Keep rows 12 to 18 inches apart

Water after planting

Keep soil evenly moist, not soggy

Remove weeds regularly

Mulch lightly to help retain moisture and suppress weeds

Feed with a balanced fertilizer if needed

Avoid overwatering to prevent rot

Harvest when tops yellow and fall over

Lift bulbs carefully from the soil

Cure harvested shallots in a dry, airy place

Store cured shallots in a cool, dry, dark location
