Identify a healthy mullein plant away from roadsides, pesticides, and polluted areas
Harvest leaves in the first year, preferably on a dry day after morning dew has dried
Pick young, clean leaves that are free of pests, mold, or damage
Harvest flowers when they are freshly open and bright yellow
Collect seeds only when seed pods are dry and brown
Use clean scissors or pruning shears to cut leaves, flowers, or stalks
Take only a small portion from each plant to avoid stressing it
Wear gloves if needed because the leaves can be fuzzy and irritating
Place harvested parts in a clean basket or paper bag
Dry leaves, flowers, or seeds promptly in a well-ventilated, shaded area
Store fully dried mullein in airtight containers away from heat and light
