Choose a healthy maple tree at least 10 inches in diameter
Tap only during late winter to early spring when daytime temperatures rise above freezing and nights fall below freezing
Select a spot on the south or southeast side of the trunk if possible
Mark a tap location about 2 to 4 feet above the ground
Use a clean drill bit sized for your spile, usually 7/16 inch or 5/16 inch
Drill the hole slightly upward, about 1.5 to 2 inches deep
Remove wood chips from the hole
Insert the spile gently into the hole
Tap the spile lightly until it is secure
Hang a clean collection bucket or attach tubing to collect sap
Check and empty the collection container regularly
Stop tapping when sap flow slows significantly or buds begin to open
Remove the spile after the season ends
Let the tree heal naturally
Avoid tapping the same spot in future seasons
Use one tap for smaller trees and more taps only for larger trees according to tree size
Sanitize tools before and after use
