Cool the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes
Remove rings, watches, or tight clothing near the area
Gently wash with mild soap and water
Pat dry with a clean cloth
Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or aloe vera gel
Cover with a sterile nonstick bandage if needed
Take over-the-counter pain reliever if appropriate
Keep the burn out of direct sunlight
Do not apply ice, butter, oils, or toothpaste
Do not pop any blisters if they form
Seek medical care if the burn is large, worsening, or shows signs of infection
