Soak the foot in warm water for 15 to 20 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day
Add Epsom salt if desired
Keep the toe clean and dry between soaks
Gently lift the nail edge with clean dental floss or a small piece of cotton if it is easy to do
Change the cotton or floss daily
Apply an antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Cover the toe with a clean bandage
Wear roomy shoes or open-toe footwear
Avoid tight socks and pressure on the toe
Trim toenails straight across
Do not cut the nail too short
Do not dig into the corners of the nail
Use over-the-counter pain relief if needed and if safe for you
See a doctor if there is pus, spreading redness, severe pain, fever, or no improvement
Seek urgent care if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system
