Apply a cold pack wrapped in a cloth for 10–20 minutes at a time during the first 24–48 hours
Rest the bruised area and avoid activities that worsen pain or swelling
Elevate the bruised area above heart level when possible
Use gentle compression with an elastic bandage if it helps and does not cause numbness or increased pain
Switch to warm compresses after 48 hours to help circulation
Take acetaminophen for pain if needed
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen during the first 24 hours if possible
Eat foods rich in vitamin C and vitamin K
Stay hydrated
Protect the bruise from further injury
Get medical care if bruising is severe, frequent, unexplained, or accompanied by significant swelling, numbness, or trouble moving the area
