Rest the ankle and avoid activities that cause pain
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time every 2–3 hours for the first 48 hours
Wrap the ankle with an elastic bandage for compression
Elevate the ankle above heart level when possible
Use crutches or a brace if needed to reduce weight-bearing
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if appropriate and safe for you
Start gentle range-of-motion exercises when pain and swelling begin to improve
Gradually return to normal activity as tolerated
Seek medical care if you cannot bear weight, pain is severe, swelling is worsening, or symptoms do not improve
