Wash your hands before holding the infant
Support the head and neck at all times
Place one hand under the head and neck
Place the other hand under the bottom and lower back
Keep the infant close to your body
Hold the infant securely but gently
Keep the infant’s face visible and uncovered
Avoid sudden movements
Use both arms when carrying the infant
Keep the infant’s head slightly elevated
Check that the infant is breathing comfortably
Never shake the infant
Sit down if you feel unsteady
Ask for help if you are unsure
