Wear fitted ice skates with secure laces
Tighten laces evenly and ensure heels do not slip
Put on warm, breathable clothing and gloves or hand protection
Find flat ice with good visibility and minimal traffic
Start by holding a wall or rail with both hands
Stand with skates parallel, knees slightly bent, and weight centered
Practice small, controlled pushes while staying near the rail
Learn the forward stride: push one skate outward slightly, then glide on the other
Keep pushes short and focus on balance before increasing speed
Practice stopping by dragging one toe pick lightly or using a snowplow wedge
Learn to do a snowplow: turn both skates inward into a V shape and press gently
Practice turning by shifting weight and angling skates gradually
If you fall, stay calm and tuck your arms in to protect your hands
To get up, roll to your side, place knees under you, then push up carefully
Use proper protective gear if you are a beginner (helmet, wrist guards, knee/elbow pads)
Take lessons from a certified instructor if possible
Always follow rink rules and stay aware of other skaters
