Wear gloves and a mask
Remove the trash bag and seal it tightly
Sprinkle salt, baking soda, or diatomaceous earth into the can
Pour boiling water directly over the maggots
Scrub the can with hot soapy water
Disinfect the can with bleach solution or vinegar solution
Rinse the can thoroughly
Dry the can completely in sunlight if possible
Replace the trash bag immediately
Keep the lid closed tightly
Take out trash more often
Rinse food containers before throwing them away
Clean the trash can regularly
Freeze meat scraps or food waste until trash day if needed
