Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible
Pull upward with steady, even pressure
Place the tick in rubbing alcohol to kill it
Seal the tick in a bag or container if you need to keep it for identification
Wash the bite area and your hands with soap and water
Disinfect the bite area with rubbing alcohol or an antiseptic
Do not crush the tick with bare fingers
Do not burn the tick while it is attached to skin
Do not apply petroleum jelly, nail polish, or heat to remove or kill the tick
If the tick is attached and you cannot remove it safely, seek medical help
