Open the grill vents
Remove the cooking grate
Stack charcoal in a chimney starter
Place crumpled newspaper or fire starters under the chimney
Light the newspaper or fire starters
Wait until the coals are covered with gray ash
Pour the hot coals into the grill
Spread the coals as needed for direct or indirect heat
Replace the cooking grate
Let the grill preheat before cooking
