Stabilize the area with interfacing
Choose the correct buttonhole stitch or machine setting
Measure the button to determine the buttonhole length
Sew a test buttonhole on scrap fabric
Place the fabric under the presser foot
Align the markings with the machine guide
Sew the buttonhole in the selected stitch sequence
Reinforce the ends as the machine completes the buttonhole
Carefully cut open the center of the buttonhole
Use a seam ripper or small scissors to open the hole
Insert a pin at each end before cutting to prevent overcutting
Trim any loose threads
Secure the buttonhole with a few hand stitches if needed
