Wash and prepare the fruit
Cut the fruit into even pieces if needed
Combine fruit, sugar, and a little water in a saucepan
Add lemon juice or spices if desired
Cook over medium heat until the fruit softens and releases juices
Stir occasionally to prevent sticking
Simmer until the compote reaches the desired thickness
Remove from heat and let it cool
Serve warm or chilled
Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator
