Wash, peel, core, and chop 4 to 6 apples
Place the apples in a saucepan
Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup water
Add 1 to 2 tablespoons sugar if desired
Add 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon if desired
Add a squeeze of lemon juice if desired
Cover and cook over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes
Stir occasionally until the apples are soft
Mash the apples with a fork or potato masher
Blend for a smoother texture if desired
Taste and adjust sweetness or spice if needed
Cool before serving or storing
Refrigerate in a sealed container for up to 1 week
Freeze for longer storage
