Drain the canned corn
Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a skillet over medium heat
Add the corn and cook for 2 to 3 minutes
Stir in 2 tablespoons flour
Add 1 cup milk or half-and-half slowly, stirring constantly
Cook until thickened, about 3 to 5 minutes
Add 1 tablespoon sugar if desired
Season with salt and black pepper
Stir in 2 tablespoons cream cheese or heavy cream for extra richness
Simmer for 1 to 2 more minutes
Serve warm
