How to Make Mussels?

Rinse and scrub the mussels under cold running water

Remove the beards by pulling them toward the hinge

Discard any mussels with cracked shells or that stay open when tapped

Heat olive oil or butter in a large pot over medium heat

Add minced garlic, shallots, or onions and cook until softened

Pour in white wine, broth, or water

Bring the liquid to a simmer

Add the mussels to the pot

Cover with a lid

Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, shaking the pot occasionally

Remove the mussels as they open

Discard any mussels that do not open after cooking

Season with salt, pepper, herbs, or lemon juice

Serve immediately with bread, pasta, or fries
