Place 1/4 cup popcorn kernels in a microwave-safe bowl or brown paper bag
Add 1 teaspoon oil if desired
Cover the bowl with a microwave-safe lid or plate, or fold the top of the bag closed
Microwave on high for 2 to 4 minutes
Stop when popping slows to 2 to 3 seconds between pops
Carefully remove the container using oven mitts
Let it cool for a minute
Add salt, butter, or seasoning if desired
