Gather rolled oats or porridge oats
Measure 1/2 cup oats per 1 cup liquid
Choose liquid: water, milk, or a mix
Add oats and liquid to a pot
Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat
Stir often to prevent sticking
Reduce to low heat and simmer 3–5 minutes, stirring frequently
Cook until thick and creamy
Turn off heat and let stand 1 minute
Sweeten or flavor as desired: salt, honey, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, fruit, nuts
Serve hot
