Seek urgent medical care before attempting removal if you have severe abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, rectal bleeding, a swollen abdomen, or cannot pass gas or stool
Wash your hands thoroughly
Gather disposable gloves, lubricant, tissues or wipes, and a clean container for disposal
Empty your bladder first if possible
Position yourself on the toilet, on a commode, or lying on your left side with knees bent
Put on gloves
Apply a generous amount of water-based lubricant to your gloved index finger
Gently insert the lubricated finger into the rectum
Feel for stool and break off only small pieces at a time
Remove loosened stool slowly and carefully
Stop immediately if you feel sharp pain, significant bleeding, dizziness, or worsening discomfort
Repeat only as needed, staying gentle and avoiding force
Clean the area with wipes or warm water after removal
Wash your hands again after removing gloves
Drink water if you are able
Use a stool softener, suppository, or enema only if a clinician or pharmacist says it is appropriate for you
Contact a healthcare professional promptly if the impaction is not relieved, keeps returning, or you have ongoing constipation
