How To Measure BP Manually?

Have the person sit quietly for 5 minutes with feet flat on the floor and back supported

Use the correct cuff size

Place the cuff on the bare upper arm, level with the heart

Wrap the cuff snugly above the elbow

Locate the brachial artery in the inner elbow

Place the stethoscope over the brachial artery

Close the valve on the inflation bulb

Inflate the cuff until the pulse disappears, then 20 to 30 mmHg more

Slowly deflate the cuff at 2 to 3 mmHg per second

Listen for the first tapping sound and note the pressure as systolic BP

Continue deflating until the sounds disappear and note the pressure as diastolic BP

Record the reading as systolic over diastolic, in mmHg

Repeat after 1 to 2 minutes if needed and average the readings

Measure both arms on the first check if possible
