Clean the micrometer and the object to be measured
Close the micrometer gently to check the zero reading
Place the object between the anvil and spindle
Turn the thimble until the spindle just contacts the object
Use the ratchet stop for consistent pressure
Read the sleeve or main scale first
Read the thimble scale next
Add the sleeve reading and thimble reading together
Include the vernier scale reading if present
Record the final measurement in the correct unit
Check the reading again for accuracy
