Check that the patio slab is sound, clean, dry, and properly sloped for drainage
Repair cracks, low spots, and loose areas before starting
Measure the patio and dry-lay the tile to plan the layout
Snap chalk lines to establish square reference lines and center the layout
Choose an outdoor-rated thinset mortar suitable for large-format tile
Mix the mortar to the manufacturer’s instructions
Spread mortar with a notched trowel in small sections
Back-butter each 12×24 tile for full coverage
Set tiles into the mortar with slight back-and-forth movement
Use tile leveling clips or spacers to keep tiles flat and joints even
Maintain consistent grout joints between tiles
Check each tile with a level as you go
Cut edge tiles with a wet saw as needed
Keep mortar out of the joints
Allow the mortar to cure fully before walking on the tile
Apply grout rated for outdoor use after curing
Clean excess grout from the tile surface
Seal the grout if required by the grout manufacturer
Leave movement joints at perimeter edges and control joints
Use a flexible exterior sealant at expansion joints
Protect the patio from rain, freezing, and heavy use during installation and curing
