Choose a healthy, disease-free stem from the rose bush
Cut a 6- to 8-inch section from a stem that has just finished blooming
Make the cut just below a leaf node using clean, sharp pruners
Remove the flower, buds, and lower leaves, leaving 2 to 3 leaves at the top
Lightly scrape the bottom inch of the stem if desired
Dip the cut end in rooting hormone
Fill a pot with moist, well-draining potting mix
Make a hole in the soil with a pencil or stick
Insert the cutting into the hole and firm the soil around it
Water the cutting lightly
Cover the pot with a clear plastic bag or humidity dome without touching the cutting
Place the pot in bright, indirect light
Keep the soil evenly moist, not soggy
Check for rooting after a few weeks by gently tugging the cutting
Transplant the cutting into a larger pot or garden spot after roots develop
Harden off the new plant before moving it outdoors permanently
