Choose a sunny location with at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight
Use well-draining soil rich in organic matter
Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost or buy healthy seedlings
Harden off seedlings gradually before transplanting outdoors
Plant after all danger of frost has passed and soil is warm
Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart
Dig a hole deep enough to bury part of the stem
Remove lower leaves and place the plant so only the top leaves remain above soil
Backfill with soil and press gently around the base
Water thoroughly after planting
Add a stake, cage, or trellis for support
Mulch around plants to retain moisture and reduce weeds
Water consistently at the base of the plant
Fertilize lightly with a balanced or tomato-specific fertilizer
Prune suckers if desired to improve airflow
Harvest tomatoes when they are fully colored and slightly soft
