How to Plant Garlic in the Fall?

Choose a planting site with full sun and well-drained soil

Prepare the soil by loosening it and removing weeds

Mix in compost if needed

Separate garlic bulbs into individual cloves

Keep the papery skin on each clove

Select the largest, healthiest cloves for planting

Plant cloves 2 to 3 inches deep

Space cloves 4 to 6 inches apart

Place cloves pointed end up and root end down

Space rows 8 to 12 inches apart

Cover cloves with soil and gently firm it

Water the area after planting

Add mulch such as straw or shredded leaves

Keep the soil lightly moist until the ground freezes

Remove weeds as they appear

Let garlic overwinter in the ground

Resume watering in spring if rainfall is low

Harvest when lower leaves turn brown and tops begin to dry
